Mr. N. Sangaran, Executive Director, Manufacturing Development (Resource), Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA)

Mr. N. Sangaran is the Executive Director of Manufacturing Development with regard to resource based industries in the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) which is the Principal Government Agency for the promotion and coordination of industrial and services development in Malaysia.

He obtained his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, England in 1977. He furthered his studies in UK obtaining a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Manchester in 1979.

He joined MIDA in 1979 as an Assistant Director. In 2006 he became the Director of Machinery and Engineering Supporting Industries Division.

In December 2012, he was promoted to the senior post of executive director, overseeing the resources industry divisions of Food Technology & Sustainable Resources, Life Science & Medical Technology, Chemical & Advanced Material, Metal and Metal Alloy.

Mr. Nizam Mohamed Nadzri, Senior Vice President – Corporate Planning & Business, Malaysia Debt Ventures Berhad (MDV)

Nizam is the Senior Vice President of Corporate Planning & Communications and Business Division at Malaysia Debt Ventures Berhad. Corporate Planning & Communications core functions are to manage and enhance stakeholder and partner relations; structure and develop new product; evaluation and improvement of MDV’s processes and methodologies; formulate and monitor implementation of corporate strategies and action plans; and develop and implement PR and communication activities.

He was previously the Vice President for Transactions under the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporations’ Industry Development Division. Transactions Unit is tasked with the evaluation, structuring, and packaging of deals for targeted potential investors that fall under the category of Priority BioNexus Applications.

Prior to this, he was the Head of MESDAQ Unit of the Securities Commission which is responsible for suitability assessment of MESDAQ Market applicants and previously the Head of Issues Department of Bursa Malaysia, covering assessment of applicants’ technology-based activities, business models, financial performances, business potential, research and development, product development plans, adequacy of disclosures and corporate governance. Before heading the MESDAQ Department, He was Head of CEO’s Office of Bursa Malaysia, advising the Executive Chairman on operational, financial and regulatory matters with respect to the Exchange, clearing house, central securities depository and other business units. He is a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Md. Harris Md. Taib, Chief Business Officer, Export-Import Bank Malaysia

Joined Export Import Bank (M) Berhad (EXIM Bank) in June, 2012 as the Chief Business Officer.

Degree from Greenwich University, London with qualifications from Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

Has over 18 years of diverse experience in Corporate Finance, Debt Restructuring, Corporate Banking, Offshore Banking and Debt Capital Markets through his working experience with Maybank and Maybank Investment Bank, Pengurusan Danaharta, Affin Investment Bank Berhad and Mizuho Corporate Bank Labuan Branch.

Mr. Jayabalan Kathiravalu, Vice President/Head – Business Development, SME Banking, Maybank

KJ Balan graduated with Bachelor in Economics from University of Malaya, and Master of Management from Universiti Utara Malaysia.

He started with Maybank since 1988 as an executive in banking operation. By 1991, he started as a credit officer in branch and move on to take a bigger role of as Marketing and Credit officer and manage loans of bigger size and portfolio. In 1999, he moved on to coordinating the setting of business centre in Maybank which he eventually lead in 2008.

In 2010, KJ Balan was appointed Regional Head for SME Banking for Penang/Kedah/Perlis region where he undertook the development of SME business in the northern region. He also worked closely with government agencies, FMM, SME Corp and various agencies that are involved in the SME business and he was also the trainer for the ABM Partner Project for the northern region.

Currently, he is the Vice President and Head of Business Development in SME Banking where he is in charge of development of Maybank’s Retail SME Business and expansion of sales and distribution channels.

His major achievement in work includes undertaking and completing organisational changes which involved transformation of people and collaboration with various stakeholders under the new house of Maybank as well as managing transformation via changing mindset of people which would be the critical success factor.

Mr. Thomas Pang, Chief Executive Officer, Keppel Infrastructure Fund Management Pte. Ltd. (Trustee of K-Green Trust)

Thomas is the CEO of Keppel Infrastructure Fund Management (KIFM), Trustee-Manager of K-Green Trust (KGT). KGT is a business trust listed on the Main Board of Singapore Stock Exchange. KGT currently owns two waste-to-energy plants and one water recycling plant located in Singapore. It is mandated to invest in “green” infrastructure assets, namely waste management, water and wastewater treatment, renewable energy and energy efficiency; with an initial focus on Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Prior to joining KIFM, Thomas was the General Manager (Corporate Development) at Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd and oversaw the investment, mergers and acquisitions and strategic planning. Thomas has a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree from Cambridge University.

Mr. Hitoshi Suyama, President & Chief Executive Officer, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC)


Mr. Suyama was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1961. He graduated from Sophia University in 1985 and started his career with Sumitomo Bank (currently known as Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation). He was attached to domestic business promotion until 1989. He received his new assignment as a dealer in Singapore until 1994 and was transferred to Brussel Branch until 1997 where he in charge of Treasury Business. Upon his return to Japan Head office in 1999, he was with Structured Finance Department, Capital Markets Group to promote domestic syndication market. From 1999 until 2008, he remained in Management position in Brazil. In December 2008 he was General Manager of Labuan Branch and concurrently Chief Representative of KL Representative Office. After SMBC obtained its banking licence, he was assigned as the President/CEO of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Malaysia Berhad in April 2011 up to present.

Mr. Suyama had more than 21 years of business career in 4 different countries namely Singapore, Belgium, Brazil and Malaysia.

Mr. Lim Yong Lee, Managing Director, Mizuho Asia Partners Pte. Ltd.

Mr Lim is Managing Director of Mizuho Asia Partners Pte Ltd. He holds an MBA in Finance and International Marketing. He has extensive hands-on experience in private equity investments (both in buyout transactions and minority growth capital investments), managing portfolio companies and corporate planning.

Mizuho Asia Partners, or MAP, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mizuho Corporate Bank. Mr Lim was previously Chief Investment Officer of Malaysian Ventures Management Inc, the private equity division of AmInvestment Group.

Mr Lim’s investment coverage includes renewable energy/clean technology, value-added resourced-based manufacturing, consumer goods, contract manufacturing, logistics services and oil & gas services.

MAP is the advisor to Mizuho ASEAN Investments LP, a private equity fund that invests in ASEAN companies seeking growth and expansion equity capital. We are sector agnostic except no investment into financial institutions, real estate properties or startups.

Our fund’s preferred bite size is US$10 mil to US$30 mil for 15%-20% voting right. We can however structure non-voting preference shares or convertible instruments to have economic interest beyond 20% voting right. The Fund’s investment tenure is typically 3 to 5 years.

Our fund serves as a useful bridge connecting Mizuho’s Japanese corporate network to bring in Japanese co-investment, strategic value-add and/or trade sale opportunity.

Suhaimi Hamzah graduated with MBA in Management from International University of Japan, Japan and a B.A. (Hons.) (Geography) from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinang.

He has experiences as Assistant Secretary in Ministry of Primary Industries and as a Principal Assistant Director at Public Service Department prior to his appointment at Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI)


Regional Updates on Biomass Growth & Production Demand

Dr. Choo Yuen May, Director General, Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB)

Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May is the Director-General of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB). She oversees and directs programmes that keep the oil palm industry at the forefront of science and foster economic growth and innovation. She has leveraged on her renowned research and leadership position to take stewardship of six and a half of the 8 entry project points (EPP) for oil palm under the Economic Transformation Program launched recently by the Prime Minister.Datuk Choo is recognized internationally for her pioneering work in the field of palm biodiesel [normal grade palm biodiesel (pour point + 15°C and winter grade palm biodiesel (pour point – 21°C)]. The principal focus of her current research is the development of novel, efficient and green processes for the palm-based industry. These include the Production and evaluation of palm biofuel including first and second generation biofuel and palm aviation fuel and Production of palm phytonutrients. She also works closely on Sustainability and Climate Change, in particular Life Cycle Assessment of Oil Palm and Products.

Datuk Choo has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Fellow of the Malaysian Oil Scientists and Technologies Association, Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry and Fellow of the Malaysian Scientific Association. She has authored and co-authored more than 837 scholarly articles, and 58 patents of which 36 have been granted and 22 pending. Several of the patents have been successfully commercialized, the most significant being the carotene-riched red palm oil and biodiesel technologies. Other technologies are those related to extraction of carotenoids, vitamin E, sterols, squalene, lecithin, co-enzyme Q, production of briquettes from palm biomass and manufacture of palm-based industry solvents and degreaser.

Datuk Choo has been honoured with more than 100 scientific and invention international and national awards, the most prestigious of which include The Knight of the International Order of Merit of Inventors awarded by International Federation of Inventors Association ( IFIA ), Most Outstanding Malaysian Women Award in conjunction with the International Women’s Day Celebration 2011, WIPO ( World Intellectual Property Organization ) Gold Medal for Best Women Inventions 1994 and 2003 and Anugerah Karya Inovasi Saintis awarded by the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities.

Ms. Norida Abdul Rahman, Senior Vice President – Technology Nurturing, Malaysia Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT)

Ms Norida is a Senior Vice President of the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) under the Prime Minister’s Department of Malaysia. She is responsible for technology nurturing and investment portfolio with focus on technology transfer and commercialisation, technology entrepreneurship and technology evaluation. She is currently responsible for High Impact Program in Green Futures and Emerging Technology. She has more than fifteen years of professional responsibility managing corporate and technology investment projects including studies and consultancy works in industrial cluster development and S&T related areas. She currently holds executive and non-executive director positions in investment flagships/strategic business units of MIGHT in the area of bio-industry, sensor technology and human capital development. She also represents MIGHT in the national and ministerial S&T related committees and state-owned corporation.

She is currently a PhD doctoral candidate in Mechanical Engineering Faculty at University Technology MARA (UITM). Her research interest is in the field of technology management with focus on R&D performance evaluation and innovation. She obtained a Bachelor Degree in Economics at Winnipeg University, Canada and earned her MBA with specialization in Finance at the University of Strathclyde, UK. She had also attended a management leadership course in corporate strategy at Wharton Business School, USA.

Mr. JP Song, President of Southeast Asia Division, Eco-Frontier, Korea

Mr. Jae Pil Song graduated with a degree in International Economics and Law from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Republic of Korea in 1992.

Prior to joining Eco-Frontier, he was the Division Head of Procurement at Korean Airlines where he developed the strategy of Supply Chain Management.

From 2008-2009, he was the Head of Eco-Frontier’s USA office leading researches into the policy and usage of renewable energy in Southern California, USA. In 2010, he was appointed the President of South East Asia Division, promoting projects to develop the utilisation of biomass resources as fuel for biomass power generation.

Mr. Toru Nagao, Director – International Cooperation, New Energy Foundation (NEF), Japan

Toru Nagao has been working at NEF for International Cooperation in Renewable Energy Field since 2007. Before joining NEF, he has been working in Fuji Heavy Industries as an aerospace engineer and chief designer of large scale wind turbines.

Prof. Dr. Bambang Prastowo, Agricultural Engineer, Senior Researcher, Indonesian Center for Estate Crops Research and Development (ICERD) Bogor, Indonesia

Bambang Prastowo studied Agricultural Engineering in Gadjah Mada University (Jogja, Indonesia) and graduated with a doctoral degree from Bogor Agriculture Institute (Bogor, Indonesia). He was the Director of the Indonesian Center for Estate Crops Research and Development (ICERD), Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) from 2005-2008, establishing the jatropha curcas processing center and seed garden and other energy’s crops development center in Pakuwon, Sukabumi West Java Indonesia.

He has been conducting research and development on farm Machineries, energy’s crops and plan oil stoves in bioenergy laboratory and utilization of agriculture biomass for 2nd generation biofuel and gasification. He was also invited speaker in some international workshops and conferences on farm machinery, biofuel, biomass energy development in Univ of Hohenheim Germany, South Korea, China, Tokyo University of Agric and Technology Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia as well.

Prof. Dr. Bambang Prastowo is currently the Senior researcher and research professor on agricultural engineering and agriculture technology and bioenergy in Indonesian Center for Estate Crops Research and Development (ICERD) Bogor Indonesia as well as a Member of National Team on Bioenergy Development and Biofuel Pricing Team. He is also the Resource Scientist at the Indonesian Nasional Team for the Biofuel Development, Republic of Indonesia and Member of the Indonesian national team for biofuel pricing, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Mr. Puad Elham, Bioenergy Programme, Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)

Puad Elham is a senior research officer at the Bioenergy Programme of the Forest Products Division, FRIM. He holds both the BSc and MSc degrees from Universiti Putra Malaysia. His expertise is on bioenergy R&D. His research finding has been published in the journals and the international and local research proceedings. To dates 4 patents have been files and 30 research awards have granted from the international and local body and institutions.

In 2011, he received The Annual Best Employee Award for the Management and Professional Category and also the recipient of the Community Service Award.

Amongst his research products which have been derived from biomass are charcoal, briquette, white charcoal, sawdust pellets, activated carbon, wood vinegar, palm plywood, oil palm flooring, oil palm sap and wood plastic composite. The most recent project is commercialisation of sawdust pellet production, in collaboration with Ligni Energy Sdn Bhd.

Dato’ Paduka Syed Isa Syed Alwi, Managing Director, Algaetech International Sdn Bhd

Dato’ Paduka Syed Isa Syed Alwi is founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Algaetech Group of Companies, which was established in 2004. Currently residing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; returning home after decades living abroad, he is an avid enjoyer of the climate, lifestyle and food that South East Asia has to offer. He is a recurrent invited speaker at various conferences speaking at over 40 International conferences & summits around the globe with emphasis on Algae Technology, Biofuels and Biotechnology.

Syed Isa comes from a background in the food service industry, working in Europe and Asia for public listed companies, and has previous experience in the renewable energy industry, having spearheaded research into jatropha for bio-fuels. Since 2004, he has steered Algaetech to dedicate in extensive research and development to algae technology, and the company has accumulated experience and expertise through the implementation of Algaetech’s research into successful projects.

Syed Isa has been named co-chair of the Malaysian node of the Millennium Project, sits on the Advisory Board of the Lifeboat Foundation, and was invited to be on the Panel of the Expert Group Meeting on Emerging Technologies by the International Centre for Science and High Technology – United Nations Industrial Development Organization (ICS – UNIDO). Recently, he was appointed as an advisor on the science advisory board of Algae Industry Magazine.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wan Mohd Nazri Wan Abdul Rahman, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Department of Wood Industries, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM)

Dr. Wan Mohd Nazri graduated with a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Forestry from Universiti Putra Malaysia, and a PhD in Wood Technology from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM). He has served as a lecturer at UiTM since 2000.

His research interests include Forest Plantation (Acacia, Leucaena, Eucalyptus), Renewable Energy (Biomass), Wood Composite: Plywood, Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), Particleboard, Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) and Oriented Strand Board (OSB).

John Low has a total of over 20 years of working experience of which 14 years were spent on consulting and over 6 years in the industry and public sector. He is currently leading the Public Services Competence Centre for South East Asia.

Mr. Low focuses primarily on serving clients in the Government, Agriculture and Commodities, Chemicals and BioEconomy sectors. He has worked for clients across Asia, US, Europe and the Middle East on projects related to public sector transformation, economic planning and industry development, strategy development and organization capability development. John also has vast experience in helping major conglomerates in successfully implementing their corporate transformation exercises.

Prior to joining Roland Berger, he was the Director in charge of various portfolios in the Prime Minister’s Department in Malaysia responsible for Social and Economic Transformation.

Mr. Razwin Sulairee Hasnan Termizi, Chief Operating Officer, Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp)

Razwin has joined Biotechcorp in 2007. Prior to his appointment to BiotechCorp, he was the Deputy Director of the Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council a position he held since 2000.

From 1995 – 2000, he was the Manager of Sime Darby responsible for corporate finance, strategic planning, investor relations, business development and finance.

Municipal Solid Waste as Biomass Feedstock

Dato’ Dr. Nadzri Yahaya, Director General, National Solid Waste Management Department

Dato’ Dr Nadzri Yahaya is the Director General of the newly formed Department of National Solid Waste Management, Ministry of Housing and Local Government since July 2007.

He also held various posts in the then Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment as Assistant Director in the Conservation and Environmental Management Division (CEMD), from 1993-1997, and subsequently as the Principal Assistant Director of the same division from 2000 to 2002.

In 2002, he became the Deputy Director in the Climate Change and Pollution Control Unit of CEMD under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and later assumed the post of Deputy Undersecretary in the Climate Change and Pollution Control Unit of CEMD in 2004.

At international level, he has vast experienced in negotiating various multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) on behalf of the government of Malaysia from 1993 until 2006.

Mr. Peter Wong, General Manager (Project Development), KUB-Berjaya Enviro Sdn. Bhd.

Peter Wong is presently the General Manager (Project Development) with KUB-Berjaya Enviro (KBE). Premised under a concession from the Federal Government of Malaysia, KBE is proud to have developed the award-winning Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill in Malaysia, from project conceptualisation to design, construction, operations and maintenance since 2003. The largest and most advanced engineered sanitary landfill in Malaysia, the Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill has pioneered the use of modern and innovative technologies in the project, such as the Zero-Discharge Policy and Reed Bed polishing system to maintain the integrity of the environment.

Peter Wong has a background in civil & environmental engineering and has more than 10 years experience in various aspects of waste management and renewable energy in Malaysia and around Asia.

Mr. Pavel Cech, Vice President – Industrial Ecology South-West and East Asia, Lafarge Asia Sdn. Bhd.

After studies of Agricultural Mechanization and Business Administration Pavel Cech started his carrier in Lafarge in 1995. Since 1998 He has been involved simultaneously in Purchasing and in what then used to be called Resource Recovery (RR) and involved into Industrial Ecology (IE).

So far, Pavel has served the Group in the Czech Republic, Nigeria, Jordan, Philippines and Malaysia.

Serving as Vice President – Industrial Ecology in Lafarge Malaysia, Pavel Cech is involved in managing and developing alternative fuel and alternative raw material business for cement plants within the region, actively pursuing business in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, directly managing IE teams in the covered countries. This activity is being relatively new to the region, within the first two years the scope reached over 600,000 MT of waste to get utilized within the given region, serving customers from diverse industries and co-processing a large variety of waste (predominantly biomass, non-hazardous solid waste, hazardous solid and liquid waste).


Biomass for Power Generation

Mr. Martin Groszek, Managing Director, Torftech Ltd.

Martin has a MSc from Imperial College and has international experience working in capital goods, production, contract engineering and R&D environments in both corporate and small business environments. He is the Group Managing Director of Torftech Ltd a company based at Greenham Business Park, Berkshire UK and has overseen the adaptation and development the TORBED Technology for biomass and waste to energy applications from pilot to commercial scale over the last 15 years including system for drying, torrrefaction, combustion and gasification.

Mr. William Tan, Chief Executive Officer, SP Multitech Corporation Berhad

Mr William S P Tan is a well-established entrepreneur in the field of electrical and environmental engineering.

After several years’ experience as an electrical engineer in Singapore, he set up his own company SP Multitech Corporation Bhd in 1996 to venture into this business. Since then, the company has handled numerous projects involving sewage treatment plants and pump stations, industrial waste water treatment plants, leachate treatment plant for a landfill, etc.

More recently, in view of the increasingly serious concerns about global warming, Mr William Tan set up a subsidiary company SP Multitech Renewable Energy Sdn Bhd to undertake renewable energy or green technology projects, particularly for biogas production and electricity generation. Mr Tan himself attended Biogas Technology training courses in Germany and is a member of BioEnergie Verbund Thuringen which is an association of biogas practitioners and scientists. The company has acquired German biogas technology via a Technology Transfer Agreement with its German partner. In particular, the company has the Dry Fermentation Anaerobic Digestion technology which is a more efficient technology for converting organic solid waste to biogas energy. The company is now ready to provide renewable energy solutions for various food processing, livestock farming, palm oil mill and municipal solid waste operations where much organic waste material are not currently utilized for their energy content.

Mr. Teoh Swee Sun, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, CE Technology Berhad

Teoh Swee Sun has served as chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors of CE Technology since he founded the company in 2002. Besides overseeing the daily operations of the company, Teoh is also directly involved in the company’s product research and development functions.

Teoh received his licentiate in rubber technology from the National College of Rubber Technology, UK. He also holds an M.B.A. in strategic management from University of Newcastle, USA.

Prior to founding CE Technology, Teoh was the managing director of Sinetimed Latex, which he co-founded in 1987. Started as an independent manufacturer of latex finger cots and cleanroom gloves, the company later become a wholly owned subsidiary of Trans Capital Holding Berhad which was subsequently listed in KLSE in 1996. In 1999, WRP Asia Pacific Sdn. Bhd. acquired a majority stake in Sinetimed Latex Sdn. Bhd. and subsequently changed its name to WRP Sinetimed Sdn. Bhd.. Teoh served as the president of the company until May 2000.

Teoh is a longtime member of the Institute of Environmental Sciences & Technology (IEST) and ESD Association, USA.

Mr. Remus Lim, Sales Manager, Vyncke Sdn. Bhd.

Joined Vyncke in December 2012 as Project Sales Manager for South East Asia (SEA) market. Main responsibilities are pursuing biomass project opportunities in SEA, targeting Industrial users e.g. Palm Oil, Food & beverages and process industry. Previous experience were dealing with Valves for Industrial steam market, working on energy saving & conservation. Besides that, some experience with Valves for Process and Oil & Gas sector as well. Graduated with Master of Engineering (Gas) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Mr. Robert Cheong, Head of Climate Change and SEA Regional Manager

Robert has more than 35 years of business acumen with vast experience diversified into areas of quality management, manufacturing, business development in various industries.

Robert holds a Masters in Business Management and technically trained in electrical engineering. He is authorized to conduct assessment in carbon emissions programs such as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Voluntary Carbon Scheme, Gold Standard, Carbon Disclosure Program, International Sustainable & Carbon Certification, Carbon Offset such as ISO 14064.

He is currently employed by TUV NORD (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd as Head of Climate Change and SEA Regional Manager and responsible for the carbon services in South East Asia including Papua New Guinea and Australia.

Mr. Mark Leslie, Director, AES Agriverde Services (Malaysia)

Mr. Leslie has extensive work experience in Asia, EMEA, and the Americas with several global corporations. In 2012 he lead a Buy Out of a group of companies focused on waste water treatment and renewable power generation. Under his leadership the management team has reduced operating costs by more than 40% and successfully contracted gas sales. From 2009 to 2011 at AES, Mark had regional operational, strategy, and Merger and Acquisition responsibilities for Asia and the Middle East. Prior to this role, in 2006 he acted as the Regional General Manager and Vice President for AES Climate Solutions ASEAN where he grew AES’ carbon offset businesses from business’ set-up into construction and operations in several ASEAN countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Other positions he has held in AES include Director EMEA and Director of Business Excellence for AES in Europe and Latin America. Prior to coming to AES in 2002, Mark also held positions in Silicon Valley and a multi-model Pan-Asian logistics company in Taiwan.

He has an MBA in International Management in Chinese from Thunderbird, School of Global Management and a BA in International Political Economy and French from Boston College.

Mr. Bert Rietveld, Business Developer, Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN)

Bert Rietveld is a senior scientist at ECN, working as a business developer of the ECN unit Biomass and Energy Efficiency (BEE). He started at ECN in 1980 in the research of materials for mainly nuclear applications. Gradually he moved into failure analysis and troubleshooting, partly in the nuclear field, but also dealing with non-nuclear issues. From about 1992 he became increasingly involved with Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) activities at ECN. From January 2000 he was the R&D manager of the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell R&D group. He has been active in many European projects, often as the consortium leader, for example of SOFC600, an Integrated Project on the development low-temperature SOFC technology. He was participating in the definition of European fuel cell research agenda and implementation plans. He started doing business development in 2010.

He is a serious Advocate of Environmental Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Agricultural through proper Biomass Management and Bio-Treatment, to produce High Value Bio Fertilizer, Bio-Fungicides, Beneficial Microbes, Organic Matters and Humic & Fluvic Acid from Palm Oil Mills Effluence and Cellulose Biomass thus generating wealth from waste of CPO productions.

Greenearth Group of Companies is capable of producing Organic Bio Fertilizer of Australian Standard AS 4454 through their partnerhip with Biotech Alliance International Sdn Bhd based in Sarawak who control a huge bank of Composting and enrichment microbes and fungi for waste handling, downstream Bio Fertilizer manufacturing and crop protections.

Dr. Mohd Norowi Hamid, Director – Strategic Resource Research Centre, Malaysian Agriculture Research & Development Institute (MARDI)

Dr. Norowi graduated with a Diploma in Agriculture from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 1985. He has a BSc. (Entomology) from Iowa State University and a MSc. in Entomology from Virginia Politechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Norowi holds a PhD from University of Greenwich & IACR-Rothamsted, Harpenden, United Kingdom.

His main research focus is on the application of system approach and information technologies to generate knowledge for developing sustainable food and farming systems.

He has more than 30 years research experiences. His research projects include quantification of ecological services provided by insect pollinators in mango ecosystem, habitat management strategies for control of Aphis gossypii and virus on chilli, the impact of rice production on environmental sustainability, distribution and systematic diversity of natural enemies, its impact on thrips population and virus spread on Solanaceae crops, impact of peatland development on the biodiversity, and development of biology indicator for sustainable production system of integrated planting of selected economically important medicinal/aromatic plants under rubber ecosystem as well as establishment the relationship between level of biodiversity and crucifer pest problems in Cameron Highland.

Dr. Norowi was one of the Malaysian delegates to RIO+20 Conference, June 2012. He was also responsible in the development of National Strategies and Action Plans of Agricultural Biodiversity and he was also four times Malaysian Delegates to Conference of Parties (COP) of CBD. COP 7, 8, 9 and 11.

Prof. Dr. Azni bin Idris, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

Dr. Azni Idris graduated with a B. Eng. (Hons) Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, M. Sc. in Environmental Pollution Control from University of Leeds, and a PhD in Environmental Engineering from University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, U.K.

His areas of interests include environmental management, waste utilisation, renewable energy from waste, wastewater treatment, toxic and hazardous waste treatment and sludge treatment.

Mr. Lee Wei Sheng, Chief Executive Officer, Vivendi Assets Sdn. Bhd.

Lee Wei Sheng graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree of Commerce from the University of New South Wales. He brings with him a wealth of experience in strategic financial decision-making, small and medium corporations funding sources as well as environmental economics.

He is currently helming Vivendi Assets, a company which produces Fish Hydrolysate Fertiliser and Labuan Food Industries Sdn. Bhd.

Mr. T R Krishnaswamy, Director, Closed Loop Systems Pte. Ltd.

T R Krishnaswamy, is a Science graduate and post graduate in Law from Bombay University.
An entrepreneur throughout his working life, he has significant experience of 3 decades in turnkey implementation of large projects in Offshore Oil exploration, Petroleum Refining, Fertiliser Plants, Power Plants and Chemical Plants, involving conceptualisation, design, detailed engineering, bid negotiation, planning, procurement and construction, testing and commissioning.

He founded Energreen Power Limited, to promote biomass energy via gasification and was involved in implementing several biomass gasification power and thermal energy Projects ranging from 25 kWe rural plant to off-grid captive systems to grid connected projects.

He founded Closed Loop Systems India Private Limited, a Company offering environmentally friendly solutions for production of thermal energy and power based on pyrolysis and bio-methanation. The Company provides plants for production of biogas, compressed and liquefied bio methane, from a wide range of “waste” substrates such as food processing waste, animal waste, agro residues, sewage sludge, municipal solid waste.

He has presented several technical papers at national and international meets conducted by Confederation of Indian Industry, UNIDO/UNEP, Indian Institute of Science, IIT, Madras, Anna University, TEDA, IT Power Asia and MNES/MNRE of Government of India.


Biomass for Biofuels & Bio-Based Products

Dr. Geng Anli, President, BioEnergy Society of Singapore (BESS)

Dr. Geng Anli is currently the President of the BioEnergy Society of Singapore (BESS). She is a Senior Manager and a Senior Lecturer at School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology of Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Prior to joining Ngee Ann Polytechnic, she worked at the Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering (IESE) as a Research Scientist and group leader. Dr. Geng obtained her Ph. D in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from the National University of Singapore (NUS). She received her M. Eng and B. Eng degrees in Biochemical Engineering from Tianjin University, P. R. China. Dr. Geng has more than 20 years R&D experience, working extensively on environmental biotechnology, and industrial biotechnology. Her current research focus at Ngee Ann Polytechnic is developing novel microorganisms for the production of industrial enzymes, chemicals and fuels, and novel nutraceuticals. She obtained Ngee Ann Polytechnic Staff Excellence Award and Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Singapore Award on Sustainable Technology in 2012.

Dr. Detlef Maeenig, Vice President – Bioeconomy, Evonik Industries AG

Dr. Detlef Mannig graduated from the University of Bonn, Germany. He has an M.Sc. from Yale University, U.S.A, and a PhD from University of Munich, Germany.

His major fields are Environmental Chemistry and Law, Manufacturing, and Marketing.

He started his career as Environmental Manager for waste water, exhaust air and waste paper, Corporate and Plant Site Environmental Manager, Plant Manager silica-based matting agent, Vice President Specialty Silicas and Matting Agents
Innovation Manager, General Manager German-Chinese JV in PRC before becoming Vice President Bioeconomy at Evonik.

Dr. Feng Han, Business Development & Licensing Leader, Dupont USA

Dr. Feng Han has an MBA from Henry B. Tippie School of Management, the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. from Department of Crop and Soil sciences, Washington State University.

He started his career as the Research Manager at Pioneer Hi-Bred Int’l Inc., Johnston, IA, USA. In 2007, Feng Han joined DuPont Applied BioSciences, China as New Business Development Manager, Biofuels, Asia Pacific, where he assessed business opportunities in China and other AP countries through internal and external market research, developed comprehensive business plans to capture and maximize value along the value chain, created business opportunities through building innovative business models.

In 2011, Feng Han joined DuPont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol in Chicago, USA as Licensing Director where is responsible for various tasks including developing and maintaining customer relationships, developing licensing offering package, developing and defining licensing strategies, leading feedstock specification and coordinating in-licensing activities

Tuan Hj. Ahmad Jaril Asis, Head of Processing & Engineering, Sime Darby Research, Sime Darby Berhad

Graduated in Chemical Engineering (B. Engineering and M Sc).

He has been working for more than 24 years with Sime Darby Plantations at various locations and positions both in Up-stream and Downstream operations mainly in palm oil milling, refining, manufacturing of Vitamin E and biodiesel. Currently he is attached to Research & Development Department, Processing & Engineering with main research area in oil palm, palm oil and rubber processing, waste water treatment, by-product utilisation and new product development.

Notable achievement for the design, construction and operation of Vitamin E and Biodiesel plant.
